Greta Haga Balčiūnaitė (she/her, b. 1989) is a Lithuanian artist based in London, UK. Greta’s practice examines human behaviour, emotional vulnerability, and the ways people seek connection within increasingly unstable and mediated environments. Working across photography, graphic design, painting, printmaking, and mixed media, she creates images that explore the relationship between instinct and technology, intimacy and distance, and fragility and resilience.
Over the past decade, Greta has built an extensive career within London’s contemporary printmaking industry, working as a collaborating printer with highly recognised studios including Coriander Studio, The Curwen Studio and Counter Editions at Carl Freedman Gallery.
Throughout this time, she has produced high-quality, limited-edition print-based artworks commissioned by esteemed artists, publishers and museums. Her practice has involved close collaboration with artists working across a diverse range of disciplines and mediums, including Sir Peter Blake, Paul Huxley, Bruce McLean, Christian Marclay, Damien Hirst, Rose Wylie, Harland Miller, Studio Lenca, Dan Baldwin, Jacky Tsai, Henrik Simonsen, Antony Little, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Barbara Rae, Lucie Bennett, Paul Insect, Arca, Daisy Parris, Javi Cajella, Cat Spilman and Blondey, among many others.
Drawing on this extensive experience and network within the contemporary art and printmaking community, Greta established her own independent print studio, Torn Editions, in 2024. The studio builds on her years of technical expertise, collaborative practice and commitment to producing exceptional editioned artworks.
Graphic Design
In 2015, Greta took a professional turn towards graphic design. A year later, in 2016, she began a graphic design project with Alessandro Adriani of Mannequin Records (Berlin, Germany). In 2020, she was offered the position of Head Graphic Designer at Soil Records (Valencia, Spain), working with Ian Broch. They continue to collaborate to this day.
Over the years, Greta has worked with numerous underground music labels from around the world, including Dead Channel Records (Ohio, USA), Mecanica Records (Łódź, Poland), Meta Moto (London, UK), Raw Culture Records (Rome, Italy), Pinkman (Rotterdam, Netherlands), Aufnahme + Wiedergabe (Berlin, Germany), Science Cult (Texas, USA), Samo Records (New York, USA), Ferma Records (Athens, Greece), Unnatural Acts (Athens, Greece), Digital Tsunami (Vilnius, Lithuania), Déclique (Kaunas, Lithuania), and Why People Dance (Lithuania), among many others.
Her practice extends beyond record labels, and she has also collaborated with talented independent artists producing music across every continent. Greta’s design work encompasses vinyl, cassette, CD, and digital album covers, as well as posters and other promotional materials, merchandise, digital assets, and more.
My practice seeks to reveal the quiet forms of connection that persist despite uncertainty, inviting viewers to recognise shared vulnerability and the fragile bonds that shape human experience.
I am driven by an interest in the psychological spaces people inhabit as they navigate social pressure, political division and rapid technological change. My work focuses closely on and documents moments where primal impulses, fears, desires, and the need for belonging emerge beneath everyday experiences. Through contrasting visual languages—softness and violence, beauty and unease, organic forms and graphic structures—I reflect the contradictions of human experience.
I build my work through a process of layering, combining photographic imagery, painting, hand-made elements, and experimental techniques to create compositions that exist between the familiar and the unsettling. Rather than offering fixed narratives, I create spaces for reflection on how people adapt, connect with one another and understand themselves within a constantly changing world.
